South Africa’s Grades R–12 and the National Senior Certificate

South Africa’s national curriculum covers Grades R through 12. At the end of Grade 12, learners may write the National Senior Certificate (NSC), commonly called matric. The national framework gives schools a shared curriculum and qualification, while provincial education departments play a role in delivery and examination administration.

For the NSC, learners study seven subjects: four required subjects and three selected subjects. The required group includes two official languages, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, and Life Orientation. The selected subjects begin in Grade 10 after choices made at the end of Grade 9. This makes the move into the Further Education and Training phase an important point for guidance and planning.

A national qualification can help universities and employers interpret results across the country. But a common certificate does not mean that every learner has the same subjects, school resources or future options. Compared with education systems where leaving certificates are organized mainly by state or province, South Africa’s NSC provides a nationally recognizable endpoint within a diverse delivery landscape.
